"When
you consider the fact that the Internet is so broad and
expansive, it’s fascinating to think how Mr. Mann’s books
bring so many people together in virtual discussions. The book
is unique because it is not only a book about Judaism, offering
a glimpse into Jewish life and traditions, but it shows that
people of all religions have the same questions and concerns
about life and faith. It is not just a book about Judaism; it is
a book about humanity."

The Jerusalem Post 3-23-07
(in print and
online.) The book was featured on the home page
of Jpost.com.
"Mann must be commended for his persistent efforts to
make Judaism more relevant to his peers. This book
introduces the reader to Mann's approach - teaching
Judaism in the spirit of the Talmud, where we also find
differing opinions on almost all subjects, and by his use
of the Internet as his classroom."
InterfaithFamily.com October 2006
"Sex, God, Christmas & Jews
brings
together a community of anonymous questioners and
responders to explore many aspects of Jewish culture and
life in modern times... The author's goal is to help make
Judaism accessible and understood for Jews and non-Jews
alike. In this he heartily succeeds."
The American Rabbi Fall 2006
His book is a delight to read, if only because
readers will find the emails (especially from the
kibbitzers) enlightening, exasperating, overly
emotional, sensible, and entertaining.
The topics invite rabbinical sermons that attend
to the problems people have to deal with on an every-day
basis.
A
century ago the Daily
Forward offered a forum to people with problems in its
Bintel Brief column, a forerunner to Dear Abby, Ann Landers,
Ask Amy, and other advisers who dispense common-sense,
no-nonsense answers. Modern
times provide a high-tech opportunity to advise the
distressed: email. Someone
with a problem can get answers from anybody, anywhere, and
if not a solution, then certainly an opinion.
Gil Mann runs BeingJewish.org, a website derived from
his work with AOL’s “Jewish Email of the Week.”
Mann is a journalist by trade, and he freely admits
he is not a rabbi. His
column serves in many ways as a clearing-house, for he
doesn’t hesitate to recommend relevant books and articles
or to solicit expert opinions from rabbis and scholars.

Intimate Emails About Faith and
Life Challenges
Opinions are like pipiks,
everybody has one. Advice is not difficult to find and is
frequently offered even when it is not sought. Dear Abby, Anne
Landers, Miss Manners and countless other mavens of right and
wrong have been heaping advice on all of us for decades. Quite
frankly there is something so very white, middle class, and
almost Puritanical to all of their offerings. I am sure some
people must have wondered to whom they can turn for haimish,
down to earth, and plain spoken advice on subjects not generally
covered in the popular advice pages.
